New standards aimed at reducing prison rape were proposed Tuesday by the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission, a bipartisan panel that spent five years studying the issue.

Hope Hernandez spoke before the panel testifying that in the late 90s, while awaiting trial on drug charges, she was denied a shower for two weeks and then raped in the shower by a prison guard. The guard got seven days suspension, with pay, for his offense.

Today, Hernandez has a Masters in Social Work and is fighting to secure rights for prisoners.
