hondurasokOusted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya, holed up in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa, has called on the Red Cross for emergency aid saying the de facto government is throwing noise bombs and toxic gas at him. Police spokesman Daniel Molina retorted with, “you lie!”

Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim told CNN en Español he thinks Zelaya has lost it after he told the Miami Herald that “Israeli Mercenaries” were torturing him with toxic gas. Amorim ordered him to simmer down while he remains an embassy guest.

Um… it’s true. Wired magazine has an article on the technology being used both against the Brazilian Embassy and protesters at the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has issued a statement this afternoon reading “security forces of the de facto regime surrounded the Brazilian Embassy and threw unidentified toxic gases, causing intoxications, bleeding, vomiting and dizziness to the persons inside the diplomatic building.”

The “Miami Herald” is usually not exactly considered an objective source for Latin American political coverage, and — in this case — seems to have “spun” what were remarks by a non-technically saavy political figure into something that sounds nutty, but is very real, and very sinister.
